What type of employers are hiring Data Analysts?

Almost all industries have a need for professionals to help them make sense of their data.

Larger established corporations with massive business data stored in their ERP and digital platforms will always require in-house data professionals to manage that data. Internet and software companies tend to also build data-centric teams. Of course, many start-ups and scale-ups today also recognise the importance of data skills to help them fine-tune their product offering and grow sales.

What qualifications or experience are beneficial to my applications for Data Analyst jobs?

A degree in math, statistics, or some form of computing will certainly be useful.

However, due to the acute shortage of skilled Data Analysts, organisations are prioritising proven experience over qualifications. Experience and expertise in SQL, advanced statistical analysis (R/SPSS/SAS/Python), and machine learning skills are beneficial.

What are the advantages of working as a Data Analyst?

With data powering the world around us, data is an exciting area to be working in. Data Analysts make sense of complex data and impact decision-making and are essential personnel in most industries and functions, including marketing, R&D, and the development of new technology.

On a more practical note, the surging demand for data scientists and data analysts means you can look forward to healthy remuneration packages if you are highly-skilled in this area!

What technical and soft skills does a Data Analyst need to have?

Being highly proficient in advanced Excel skills and visualisation tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, or Qlik, as well as having an understanding of databases such as SQL, Oracle, MySQL or No SQL is beneficial. Computer programming skills, SQL coding, and knowledge of Big Data technology will also stand you in good stead.

These technical skills show that you’re able to understand and use data to get to the most viable solution, but it’s the ability to communicate and influence stakeholders – both technical and non-technical – with your findings that will set you apart from the competition.
