Your Cloud Computing recruitment questions, answered
Yes. Recent years have accelerated everyone’s adoption of Cloud Computing, which means that the demand for Cloud professionals – in all sectors and industries – is at an all-time high.
From a technical perspective, skills and experience are key things to look out for. AWS, Azure, or public Cloud skills would be ideal for junior professionals, and a university degree in Computer Science, Technology, or similar fields wouldn’t hurt either.
First-hand experience is critical, especially for DevOps engineers whose code your products and software will depend on. Make sure they come from a developer background (proprietary or open source), with provable understanding of best practices.
But what truly sets Cloud and DevOps professionals apart are soft skills. These include the ability to manage technical teams and at the same time communicate challenges and solutions to non-technical stakeholders within the business.
First, understand their technical qualifications and skills from their CV and assess them if necessary, through a take-home or onsite test. Then, at the interview, focus on assessing soft skills like communication and delivery. Ask them about challenges they have overcome, solutions they have implemented, and how these experiences transfer to their role in your organisation.
It’s also important to determine their appetite for learning and upskilling. Ask if they’re committed to learning about the latest Cloud Developments and how they do this, to discover if they have a ‘growth mindset’. Lastly, don’t forget to assess for culture fit – you’ll want someone who will fit into the dynamics of your existing teams!
