Your Data & Advanced Analytics recruitment questions, answered

What's the market like for Data and Analytics professionals in China?

The rise in predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and automation is driving enterprises to make use of and build proprietary data tools to enable data-driven decision-making capabilities.

As a result, the demand for Data and Analytics professionals is rising quickly and those with especially strong technical and modelling skills are being snapped up by employers in China.

Which data professionals will I struggle to find when recruiting?

As organisations look to change the way they engage with their customers, their service models, the way they operate and of course an even greater move towards automation, Data professionals are in high demand.

Data Analysts, Business Intelligence Developers, Data Scientists and Database Developers are highly popular roles. On top of the technical skills, the best candidates are those who can present a combination of business acumen and data skills, as well as solid stakeholder management and influence skills. However, these candidates are a few and far between.

What are the top 3 skills for Data professionals?

The technical skills a data specialist needs will of course vary with the role so it is hard to limit it, but the top three skillsets that you should keep an eye out for are definitely SQL and Excel (the basics), big data tech, and data modelling. Solid hands-on experience or knowledge of SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, NoSQL and visualisation tools, such as PowerBI, Tableau and Qlik will also be useful.

When recruiting Data professionals, what other skills should I look out for?

It’s rare for good Data professionals to be hired just based on their technical experience. Aside from expertise in solution building and program management, with the way technology and requirements are changing all the time, it’s important to hire people with a good handle on soft skills - especially communication, problem-solving, critical-thinking and attention to detail.

For many roles, you’ll want someone with great communication and delivery, who can confidently present and discuss data with stakeholders across business as well as technical teams. Being able to communicate well in English will be critical in MNCs. Other soft skills to help drive your data strategy include strong analytical skills, inquisitiveness and being able to approach challenges differently.
